Requirements for dairy with Beter Leven quality mark known

16 April 2019 - Tim Roetman

The requirements for dairy products with a '1 star Better Life' quality mark have been published. Several products with this quality mark appeared in the Jumbo last week, but the supermarket chain officially announced the dairy line on Monday 15 April.

This concerns products such as full-fat and skimmed yogurt and full-fat and semi-skimmed milk. The so-called 'Dairy with 1 star' is only available at Jumbo, where the quality mark is also only worn by products with the Jumbo own brand. The quality mark was developed in collaboration with Dierenbescherming, Natuur & Milieu and Vogelbescherming Nederland.

With this quality mark, Jumbo hopes to lead the way in the field of the environment and animal welfare. In addition, there is a solid demand for other products with the Beter Leven quality mark. Whether Jumbo will release even more dairy products with this quality mark depends on the success of this first line.

Criteria
To meet the requirements of this dairy line, dairy farmers have to guarantee, among other things, a more cow-friendly barn and better care for the calf. In addition, grazing for cows and young stock, feed from local producers, herb-rich grassland and space for meadow birds is an obligation. You can read in this article what the implementation of these requirements will entail in concrete terms Factsheet.

There are currently 6 dairy farmers who supply the dairy line with milk. Since the project is a collaboration with Farmel, this party has designated the 6 dairy farmers. They receive a supplement of €0,06 on top of their regular milk price.
