Cheese listing makes comeback by DCA

30 April 2019 - Wouter Baan - 3 comments

About 20 years after the disappearance of the cheese quotation in Leeuwarden, DCA-Markets will start on Thursday 2 May with a new foil cheese quotation for Gouda and Edam. This quotation is compiled and published every Thursday, along with the DCA quotations for skimmed milk concentrate, cream and spot milk.

"These dairy quotations are important benchmarks for parties in the sector," says René van 't Riet of DCA-Markets. According to him, the quotations provide insight and information about physical trading. The quotations for spot milk, cream and skimmed milk concentrate are increasingly used as a benchmark for parties to make price agreements among themselves. "Due to demand from the sector, DCA-Markets has therefore decided to start listing high-moisture Foliekaas Edam and Gouda from 2 May."

Specifications and working method
It concerns cuttable foil cheese, without coloring, made from cow's milk in Euroblock 15 kilos and vacuum-packed in foil. In addition, the following applies: pick up within 1 month, ex a Dutch or German factory (destination Europe), ripened for a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 6 weeks when shipped and has a shelf life of at least 6 months.

In order to compile the cheese quotations, DCA-Markets approaches a panel of contributors every Thursday. This panel currently consists mainly of traders. They provide anonymously a price on which they have traded in the week in question. Based on this, the price reporting system of DCA-Markets calculates an average price.

Prices that deviate too much from the average are eliminated according to a standard protocol. The quotations are published every Thursday around 16:30 pm Boerenbusiness published, including a brief explanation and the number of observations.

Shade period in April
Since April, the foil cheese quotations for Gouda and Edam have been compiled in the background. According to Van 't Riet, the quotations have made the first steps. "We have done this consciously in order to be able to start on a well-founded basis from 1 May."

In recent weeks, the quotation for Gouda increased by €0,12 to €2,85 per kilo (ex works) in week 17. In the same period, the quotation for Edam also increased by €0,12 to €2,79 per kilo . The two quotations thus underline the upward trend on the cheese market.

Van 't Riet says that DCA-Markets may also list Cheddar, mozzarella and low-moisture foil cheese in the future. "This depends on the demand from the market." In addition to dairy quotations, DCA Markets also quotes for potatoes, carrots, pigs, piglets, phosphate rights and manure.

I think the price for Edam in your article is incorrect (will deviate at most 10ct from the Gouda price. Good luck with your listing / mvgr Rik
