The decline in Australia's milk production continues to increase. In April it was also significantly lower than last year. The lower supply in New Zealand means that Oceania has less milk in April than in 2018.
Both Australia and New Zealand are likely to enter winter this year with a low point in milk production in June. In anticipation of this, milk production in the spring always tends to decrease.
Drought in New Zealand
The dry weather conditions in January and February have hit milk production in New Zealand in April. This decreases by 8,4% to 1,364 million tons. This brings the supply in April to the level of 2016. The milk supply in the 2018/2019 season (up to and including April) amounts to 20,977 million tons. This means that the country is still 2,3% ahead of the 2017/2018 season, when the counter stood at 11 million tonnes after 20,5 months.
Australia's milk supply is falling increasingly rapidly
In Australia, milk production is falling a little faster every month. Where the supply was still limited in March 10,6% plummeted, production in April shows a decline of 13,7% compared to the same month in 2018. The dry weather, high feed prices and high water prices are taking their toll on the Australian dairy industry. In the first 10 months of the current milking season, supply is already 7,3% behind the 2017/2018 season.
