Cheese market is waiting for new impulses

June 20, 2019 - Wouter Baan

The cheese market is clearly looking for new impulses. The DCA foil cheese quotations (Gouda and Edam) have already lost ground over the past week and that trend has not stopped yet.

"The cheese trade is currently being turned around," say a number of trading parties. As a result, cheese prices are under pressure in the short term, although the prospects for the longer term are not necessarily very negative.

Negative fat market
Reference is made to drought in Eastern Europe, which can limit the availability of milk. For the time being, this is not yet affecting the dairy market. Cheese prices are now mainly influenced by the negative sentiment in milk fat. The butter price van ZuivelNL fell by €5 to €380 per 100 kilos, although current market prices are considerably lower.

The DCA foil cheese quotation for Gouda fell this week by €0,03 to €2,82 per kilo. The DCA quotation for Edam yields €0,01 to €2,78 per kilo. It is expected that the bottom in the market has been reached.
