The Irish dairy sector made a significant jump in milk production in May. The milk lake is even expanding to such an extent that in the fifth month of 2019 Ireland is rapidly approaching the declining Dutch milk production.
Ireland reports record high milk production in May this year: more than 1,13 million tonnes. This is more than 10,8% more than in May 2018. In April, milk supply already increased by more than 15% compared to last year. The Irish dairy sector is booming in recent months anyway. Factories are running at maximum capacity and the growth of Irish dairy farming (in combination with favorable weather conditions) is helping to increase production.
Near the Netherlands
Ireland's milk production is quickly approaching that of the Netherlands. Our country produced just over 1,2 million tons in May. This does not mean that Ireland poses a threat to our position in the European Union, as Irish milk production plummets in the months outside the grazing season. However, it does say something about the potential that Irish dairy has.
