Holiday feeling takes over cheese market

4 July 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The holiday feeling takes over the cheese market. The market is thin and appears to be quite balanced, with neither buyers nor sellers feeling pressured to do business. Nevertheless, the DCA quotations for foil cheese are creeping up slightly.

The DCA quotation for Gouda this week is 27 at €2,88 per kilo ex works, which is a plus of €0,05 (or 1,75%) compared to the previous week. For Edam, the DCA quote is €2,76 per kilo ex works, which is an increase of €0,03 (+1,1%). An indication of the slightly rising prices of foil cheese are the export prices, which are causing upward pressure.

Weather can 'game change'
Prices have also risen slightly in a tender (due to low volumes). Nevertheless, it is not expected that the cheese quotation will quickly shoot through the €3. The big buyers are going on holiday soon and have already taken their positions. Producers have probably sold enough before the holidays and are not too much on the market.

It is striking, however, that prices in the United States are considerably higher than in the European Union, while cheese prices in New Zealand have actually been lowered. A possible 'game changer' for the cheese market could be the weather. Especially in a scenario in which the summer turns out to be dry, feed prices rise and less milk becomes available on the market.
