The production of organic milk in the Netherlands increased by 2015% between 2018 and 47. The organic milk pool rose in that period from 0,177 billion liters of milk to 0,260 billion liters of milk.
Volume growth accelerated from nearly 21 million liters in 2015/2016 to over 37 million liters in 2017/2018. The share of organic milk in total milk production was almost 2018% in 2. The total Dutch production reached 2018 billion liters in 14. Due to the introduction of the phosphate rights system, total milk production fell by 2018% in 2,9.
Difference with current milk price
The supply of organic milk is regulated, as the milk price in 2015 and 2016 approached € 0,50 per kilo and the usual milk price fell from almost € 0,40 to less than € 0,30. The number of switches in 2016 explains the accelerated growth of organic milk production. When this extra milk supply came into play in 2018, the organic milk price came under pressure.
The guaranteed price for FrieslandCampina's organic milk has fluctuated between €5 and almost €0,47 over the past 0,49 years. The milk price paid is usually about €0,01 higher. The price difference with the payment price of conventionally produced milk at FrieslandCampina in 2018 was €0,11 per kilo of milk.
The Netherlands is lagging behind
The agricultural sector in the Netherlands lags far behind compared to other European countries in terms of both acreage and retail turnover. This is evident from figures from the IFOAM EU Group. In 2017, approximately 3% of the Dutch acreage of grassland and arable land was cultivated organically. More than half (56%) is grassland and 0,4% of the total maize area is organic.
