No roughage shortage yet

12 August 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

Although several livestock farmers in the east and north of the country have already started their winter stock, according to forage traders there is not yet a clear shortage of roughage. According to them, it is always drier in the last months of the summer, but this year it is no more extreme than in other years.

According to various forage traders, winter supplies in some regions are in short supply East and the north of the country have already been addressed; It is dry, especially in the Achterhoek, and additional feeding is now being carried out. However, if they look at the situation throughout the Netherlands, it cannot necessarily be called special. "It is always a bit drier in the last months of the year."

Concern
The fact that there are no extreme shortages is underlined by the fact that there are currently little question is for products to supplement. According to traders, this is partly due to a significant reduction in the livestock population; there are fewer cows and therefore less feed is needed. In addition, they say that many livestock farmers have a relatively good performance first en second mowed a section of grass, just like last year.

On the other hand, many livestock farmers have not mowed a third cut. During the period of extreme heat, it has dried up in many places. Some farmers in the north of the country have also suffered from mouse damage. This does explain why the north and east of the country in particular need to feed more. After all, the drought was heaviest in the east and the mouse damage was mainly in the north.

All in all, however, the situation does raise concerns for the coming years. According to these forage traders, the fact that there have been virtually no shortages this year also means that if we have a normal season we could end up with an extreme oversupply. "There is a chance that the market will collapse."
