20 August 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

Now that many livestock farmers are concerned with the new crop of silage maize, the price of silage maize is starting to come under pressure. The excellent quality is sold out, so a price of €70 is no longer considered feasible. What other movements are visible in the feed market?

Many livestock farmers are waiting for the silage corn of the new harvest, which means that there is currently little demand for the current silage maize. The maize that is still being sold at the moment is often sold at lower prices. After all; the pit must be empty. This means that the prices of the past weeks, with Top at €72 per tonne free from farm, can no longer be achieved.

This week the price for maize for silage/silage is €65 per tonne free from the farm, for the better quality. Lower quality maize is sold free of charge for approximately €60 per tonne on the farm. It is expected that the first silage maize will not arrive much earlier than normal (mid-September). According to traders and analysts mainly because the damage caused by drought this year is not too bad.

Hay relatively expensive?
The price for meadow hay rose last week to €150 per tonne franco farm and will remain at this level this week. In addition, trade still takes place mainly between farmers. Looking at the chart below, the price appears to be relatively low. However, if the price is compared to Germany, then it is actually high. In Germany, the most expensive hay is sold in Lower Saxony and Brandenburg: €148 to €150 (large bales).

There is also little demand for the product in that country, which means that the price there has also been stable for a few years in a row. The average price for the large bales of hay is €120 per ton. The relatively cheap hay is sold in Saxony-Anhalt, where the price is around €90 per tonne.

Waiting for Avebe
There is currently a demand for potato by-products, but this is not yet reflected in the trade. This is largely due to the fact that Avebe's price has not yet been announced. Forage traders hope that this price will be clear by the end of next week, after which trading is expected to take a sprint.

In general, supply and demand are in balance. This means that the prices remain stable. That's how it stays straw are at €105 per tonne free from the farm and brewer's grain still quotes €2,30 per percent dry matter. The price for corngold seems to be going up a bit (+€0,05) and is therefore almost the same price as brewer's grains.
