Milk production in New Zealand got off to a flying start to the new season, but the supply figures for July paint a milder positive picture.
New Zealand dairy farmers produced 274.000 tonnes of milk in July. That is 4,5% more than in the same month last year. However, the second supply figures for the 2019/2020 season (which runs from June to May) present a more moderate picture, given the production about June still 15% ahead. In addition, it is also the best start to the season in New Zealand ever.
Leveling off growth
Milk production has been increasing seasonally since August, before peaking in October. Only then can the balance about the start of the season be drawn up. The expectation of the dairy cooperative Fonterra, which processes almost 80% of the milk, is that the years of growth are leveling off this season. They expect a production increase of less than 1% compared to the previous season.
