While the price for silage maize was under pressure last week, this week the prices of brewer's grain and straw are under pressure. There is more supply than demand for both products, which means that prices are forced to take a step back.
The price of maize silage rose last week slightly under pressure, but has found a stable level again this week. The price remains at €65 per tonne, free of charge. However, the quality is decisive, which means that there are also peaks of €50 and €68 per tonne, free of charge. In this market, supply is (much) greater than demand, which is mainly due to the fact that the new harvest is expected. Traders report that the first new silage maize will probably become available in approximately 14 days.
Step back for straw price
The straw price is under pressure this week and is therefore forced to take a step back. The price (for both wheat and barley straw) amounts to €100 per tonne, free of charge. The traders indicate that the price is slightly lower in the south of the country and slightly higher in the north, due to the transport distance.
Due to the relatively favorable weather conditions, almost no product was lost, making the supply more than sufficient. On the other hand, the demand from (dairy) farmers cannot be called spectacular, which has created an imbalance between these factors.
The price of spent grain is also declining. The price drops from €2,30 per percent dry matter to €2,25 per percent dry matter. Here too, supply and demand are not in balance. In addition, the trade in red fescue, tall fescue and meadow meadow is over, meaning that prices for this week remain stable at €145, €130 and €135 per tonne free at the farm.
Meadow hay prices are holding up
Not only is there less demand for straw, but meadow hay also does not seem to be very popular. Yet the price is holding up, which is partly due to the fact that there is little product available. The price remains at €150 per tonne, free of charge. Depending on the quality, the price can vary from €130 to €160 per ton, free of charge.
Last week there was limited trade in potato products. The price is around €30 per tonne, free of charge. This mainly concerns rejected product that must be traded in the short term (3 to 4 days).
