FrieslandCampina is not going to build a mega factory in the Groningen village of Bedum after all. This decision also ensures that the diversion of the 'het Boterdiep' waterway is completely off the track.
The cooperative was planning to build a new milk powder factory in Bedum. This would have to be much larger (2 powder towers, each 50 meters high) than the existing location on Boterdiep Westzijde. However, for the construction of the factory it is necessary that 'het Boterdiep', a waterway that flows right through Bedum, is filled in and relocated.
The relocation and filling of the waterway did not go down well with the residents of the Groningen village, who protested. Zuivelcoöperatie FrieslandCampina has now announced that it is taking the protests into account and is therefore abandoning construction. Also plays note that there is more demand for PlanetProof and VLOG milk.
Still planning
However, the company does say that it still has expansion plans in Bedum. "We are now looking at opportunities at the current location," the company said Financieele Dagblad† "If a new factory is nevertheless chosen, it will in any case be smaller and less high."
