While France produced slightly less milk in July than last year and the 5-year average, dairy farmers in Italy produce slightly above that level. This is evident from the new figures from the European Commission.
Dairy farmers in France produced 1,96 million tons of milk in July, which is approximately 1% less than in this month last year. That year production amounted to 1,98 million tons. Compared to the 5-year average, production is also 1% lower, as production for that period also amounts to 1,98 million tons.
Although it appears that milk production in 2018 and the 5-year average are at the same level, a minimal difference of 650 tons is still visible. If we look at the whole of 2019, it is clearly visible that the French dairy farmers have been producing below last year's level all year. Supply was significantly lower, especially in February: -2,8%. One of the reasons for this may be the drought that the country has been experiencing all year round.
Italy produces more
The situation in Italy is just the opposite. In that country, dairy farmers already produce all year round more milk than last year and then the 5-year average. The milk supply for July amounts to 979.340 tons, which is approximately 0,6% more than last year. In 2018, milk production in this month amounted to 972.730 tons.
The 5-year average, on the other hand, is considerably lower, with 933.540 tonnes recorded in July. This means that Italian dairy farmers have produced just under 5% more milk in July this year.
