17 September 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

It is quiet on the feed market, and according to traders this is mainly because they are waiting for the new harvest of silage maize. Although almost no product is traded, the first price indications have already been given. Where do they come from?

It was expected that the first silage maize of the new harvest would already be on the market, but nothing could be further from the truth. Although chopping is currently taking place, there is hardly any trade in new ones corn. The various forage traders say that this is partly due to the cautious atmosphere in the market, as a result of last year's high price.

The first price indications for this year are therefore slightly lower and are between €1,50 and €1,60 per percent dry matter. This amounts to €45 to €55 per tonne, free of charge. In addition, a hectare price of €1.800 to €1.900 is mentioned. Because new maize is expected to hit the market soon, the price of silage maize/old silage maize is under some pressure. For this week, however, the price remains stable at €65 per ton, free at the farm.

Beer grains slightly raised
Slightly more demand was shown last week brewer's grain and Corngold. Because the supply from the breweries is decreasing, the delivery times of spent grains are increasing slightly. This increases the price by €0,05 to €2,30 per percent dry matter, although prices of €2,40 per percent dry matter are also mentioned here and there. In contrast, Corngold's delivery times are decreasing again, currently being 1 to 2 weeks. The price remains around €2,35 per percent dry matter.

Not only is there a lot of demand for spent grain and Corngold, but the demand for potato products has also increased. The problem, however, is that potato press fibers and potato steam peels, for example, are relatively difficult to obtain at this time of year. In addition, the small potato crop last year also played a major role in the shortage. The price of potato steam peels is currently around €2,15 per percent dry matter.

little trade
In general, however, there is little trade on the feed market. For example, the price for straw (both wheat and barley straw) remains at €100 per tonne free of charge and meadow hay is listed at €140 per tonne free of charge for the third week in a row. In addition, there is also little trade in perennial ryegrass and silage. The prices for these products remain at €110 per tonne free at farm and €50 per tonne free at farm respectively.
