In June, the milk supply from Poland showed a slight decrease, but in July the dairy farmers in the country increased production again, according to new figures from the European Commission. As a result, milk supply is again above the level of 2018.
Dairy farmers in Poland produced 1,056 million tons of milk in July. That is 3,3% more than last month. Production is approximately 1% above the level of the same month last year. As Polish dairy farmers have stepped up a gear, milk supplies are at their highest level for July since 2004.
The 5-year average is 1,01 million tons of milk. This is approximately 3,8% less than was produced in this month this year. If we take a look into the future (based on the seasonal trend), we can cautiously conclude that milk production will probably start a downward trend in the coming months.
Influence of drought
The fact that milk production stagnated in June was mainly due to the persistent drought. Poland has been plagued by drought since the summer of 2018, with damage now estimated at approximately €800 million. Farmers can therefore count on so-called 'drought support' of €229 per hectare. Now that summer is coming to an end, warm weather conditions have less influence on milk production.
