Enough is enough for 8 angry Cono farmers

27 September 2019 - Wouter Baan - 9 comments

A group of 8 dairy farmers from Cono Kaasmakers are going to court. These farmers believe that many labour-intensive and cost-increasing measures are imposed without the involvement of higher authorities. According to these farmers, there is no real milk price in return. Wim Betten, the director of Cono, regrets the move.

The group of 8, who call themselves the critical Cono farmers, will go to court to check whether the measures, such as the VLOG obligation, have been fairly imposed. Although Cono Kaasmakers is owned by the members, the dairy farmers say they have no say. "We are no longer bosses in our own stable", is the objection. They are assisted in the process by lawyer Dinant te Biesebeek of the law firm of the same name from Zwolle.

Driven sustainability
A dairy farmer who belongs to the group says that he has had enough. According to him, new sustainability rules are always being devised under the guise of market demand (such as the VLOG feed obligation that will take effect in 2020). "Whether or not VLOG feed cannot be traced in the milk, why should we adhere to this obligation?"

The fear is that the requirements (which are currently being rewarded with supplements) will eventually serve as a basis for the milk price. "I think it is realistic that the bonuses will become fines in the future, while the milk price is already not cost-effective. This while many of these measures, which result from the program Caring Dairy ++, are impossible for an individual dairy farmer to monitor."

Fear that bonuses will become discounts is not justified

- Wim Betten

Departing from Cono is not an option for the dairy farmer, partly because there is hardly any delivery space at other dairies. Moreover, the dairy farmers are noticing the excessive urge for sustainability not only at Cono, but also at other processors. "In the past, Dutch agriculture was the champion of cost control, but we have to be careful not to price ourselves out of the market."

'We encourage, we do not oblige'
Betten says she regrets the lawsuit. "The conflict has been going on for a while, but unfortunately we did not resolve it together. We offered 'mediation', but it was rejected." According to the director, Cono focuses on sustainability, animal welfare and non-GMO, because the market demands it. "Of course we encourage our members to participate, but it is not mandatory," assures Betten. “Most of the 450 Cono farmers understand this and are on board.”

The fear that bonuses will become discounts in the future is not justified, according to him. "That is not the case at the moment." It is possible, however, that dairy farmers who do not participate in the vlog feed obligation may have to make a personal contribution, because milk has to be collected separately. The criticism that the milk price from Cono would be too low, according to Betten not justified. "Relatively speaking, we are doing well and that is thanks to our distinctive cheeses."

Chance of succeeding?
Te Biesebeek sends the summons out at the end of October. The lawyer estimates that the procedure can take 1 to 2 years. He thinks the dairy farmers have a good chance of getting the judge right. Betten in turn thinks that Cono cannot be blamed on the basis of the articles of association, delivery conditions and the household regulations.

This is in response to it Boerenbusiness article:

It's a shame that it now has to be fought in court.....
It's the old song, the administrators want power but not accountability. They don't want financial consequences for themselves. They have retired with a big bag of money and the farmers are looking forward to it.
The Cono started the sustainability competition and the rest had to participate for competitive reasons.

“Most of the 450 Cono farmers understand this and are on board.”

The majority do not dare to say no, that is quite another, because where should you deliver?
The sustainability craze has hit everywhere and the price is bad everywhere... especially with all those rules that all cost time and money!
You can no longer call it entrepreneurship because the factory is the boss on the farm, and the fun of farming has completely disappeared!!!

De Cono praises the farmers to the consumer, but meanwhile, what the consumer does not know, we have nothing to say there.
The price is below standard, and that Beemster cheese is paid dearly
I am proud of the Beemster, born and bred, let's keep it that way.
And let the Cono see to it that the farmers keep their pride.

It is indeed a pity that a lot of money from the Cooperative goes to lawyers. Many farmers do not realize that a buyer is also needed to produce a product. They deliver to the Cooperative, demand a good milk price, no rules and the Cooperative will just figure it out.
Bert 27 September 2019
It's outdated if you think, I produce milk MY way and the cooperative MUST collect it at a good price.
Times have changed and those who are the most flexible last the longest in the battle to get their product on the shelves, because that's what it's all about.
It is true that all sustainability rules require more and more effort.
Ton Westgeest 27 September 2019
So Bert you don't think it is of this time anymore to think "the cooperative belongs to the farmers".
You think it is more appropriate these days that "the farmers are all employed by the cooperative?"
Yes it will be a different story.....
Bert 28 September 2019
Cooperation means working together to better value your product, so also making efforts that go beyond your own yard, or are intangible such as mandatory vlog feed.
I think many farmers would like to supply to cono they pay the highest milk price, but they are no longer taking on members
peter 28 September 2019
Dear Bert, when I (colleague dairy farmers) ask, they think it's enough with all the coercion of RFC rules!
To name:

- stricter freezing point standard
- stricter bototic acid standard after 50 years + - no fine now with 2 times fine - Calf ok
-Kringloopwijzer obliges to provide company data for free to abuse
-koekompas has to fill in a whole book of rules required to provide additional staff at RFC with work and we again provide free information about our company which is used against us in even stricter rules and the phasing out of certain members!
-grazing with one member take money and give the other member
-focus planet take money from one member and give the other member or play members AGAINST each other.
etc, etc, etc.......

Many farmers are TIRED of more and more OBLIGATIONS and less and less milk money paid out in cash. Milk price from 40 years ago!!

Many members don't dare to say anything anymore, because they are being killed by the members' council.

or their own members are referred to stop! As a result, the rest of the members can go back to the stock market next year to buy the bonds of the stoppers and supplement the capital RFC!!

The Council of Members should be deeply ashamed of how they pit their own members against each other like that!!!

Ton Westgeest 28 September 2019
Bert I agree with the statement that you MAY do something extra for your cooperative.

Do you find workshops, fill in action plans, fill in sustainability monitor, fill in recycling compass, fill in cow compass with the vet, fill in indicator list, colostrum accounting, fill in PBB, fill in DDD, fill in BGP, pass on calf mortality, pass on Rendac, Qlip checks on all fronts too she doesn't concern me, water checks, vet checks, grazing, cow brushes in the stable and how much ...., mandatory VLOG food, and food you can no longer feed, and then I probably haven't thought of everything yet . Are they all tangible?

Yes, cooperatives were set up by the farmers to better value the products together, but it was not the intention to turn it into a communist stronghold....
With Headquarters that imposes new rules every year and does what it wants with money from the farmers (FC). Including Stasi (Qlip). I don't think that was the intention.....

And that they no longer accept members does not matter, because I am already a member. And don't think I'm bad with my co-op, but I almost got beat up after a meeting for opening my mouth. So I didn't go there anymore.
Ton Westgeest 14 October 2019
The difference in milk price should be much more with the Cono.

No, because we look at the other factories, what they pay out. That's nice!
So you don't look at what you earn with the milk, but you look at an almost bankrupt FC and an A-Ware who is busy with all investments to keep his head above water...
This is not realistic, towards your members / farmers.

Without all the nonsense like: workshops, fill in action plans, fill in sustainability monitor, fill in circular compass, fill in cow compass with the vet, fill in indicator list, colostrum accounting, fill in PBB, fill in DDD, fill in BGP, report calf mortality, pass on Rendac, Qlip checks on all fronts also what she is not concerned with, water checks, vet checks, grazing, cow brushes in the stable and how much ...., mandatory VLOG food, and food that you can no longer feed, they would already only be 5 euro cents can pay more!
You can no longer respond.
