The prices of the various types of beef chunks fell again sharply in September, according to new figures from Wageningen Economic Research. Maize core chunks, in particular, are showing a sharp fall in prices.
The largest price drop is due to silage maize core chunks, because the price for this product drops in September by €0,70 to €31,50 per 100 kilos. The price is still above the 2017 level. Protein-rich chunk B also became cheaper in September. The price for that month is €25,45 per 100 kilos, which is €0,35 lower than in August. The price of pink calf chunks drops in the same order of magnitude to €26,40 per 100 kilos.
The price of standard chunk A became €0,15 cheaper in September, bringing the price to €23,20 per 100 kilos. As a result of this price drop, the price is below last year's level for the first time, when the price in September was €23,80 per 100 kilos. The price of beef bull chunks has fallen by €0,30 to €24,40 per 100 kilos.
Further decline expected
When we look at the compound feed price indicator van Boerenbusiness, then it appears that the price can continue to fall until at least March 2020. This is partly due to the low price of palm kernel flakes, which is today one of the most important components in the composition of standard chunk A.
