Dairy farmers in France and Italy produce about the same as last year, according to the latest figures from the European Commission. In addition, the seasonal trend shows that milk supply could increase slightly again in the coming month.
French dairy farmers produced 1,860 million tons of milk in September. This is about 0,6% more than last year, when the milk supply in the country amounted to 1,847 million tons. Towards the month before a decrease is visible (-3,4%). This is not surprising, according to the seasonal trend of the French milk supply. There is always a decrease around this time of year.
The 5-year average of the French milk supply for September amounts to 1,863 million tons, which is slightly more than this year. A difference of 0,1% is visible. 2018 is also slightly below that level. It should be noted, however, that the 5-year average will probably be slightly boosted by 2015. In that year, milk production in September was 1,938 million tons, which is significantly higher than in subsequent years.
Lower production in Italy
Milk production in Italy plunged last month again below the level of last year and it will remain there in September. The dairy farmers in the country produced 904.550 tons during that month, which is about 0,5% less than last year in the same month. When we look at the seasonal trend, milk supply is expected to be slightly higher next month.
If the milk supply for the month of September is compared with the 5-year average of that month, a difference of approximately 3,2% is visible. The average for that month is 875.990 tons. Especially in 2016, milk production was low in September, when 'only' 824.350 tons were produced.
