Dairy farmers in the United States have significantly increased production in October, the latest figures from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) show. Milk production per cow is also higher this month than last year.
Dairy farmers in the top 24 milk-producing states of the United States produced 7,84 million tons of milk in October. That is approximately 1,7% more than in the same month last year. In October 2018, milk production amounted to 7,7 million tons. Towards last month an increase is also visible (+3%). Compared to the 5-year average (7,58 million tons), an increase of approximately 3,4% has been achieved. Compared to previous years, American dairy farmers are also producing considerably more this year.
More milk per cow
The US Department of Agriculture has also published new figures on the dairy herd. According to these figures, the dairy herd for October 2019 amounts to 8,81 million cows, which is 1.000 fewer than in the same month last year. It is striking that this is approximately 5.000 more than in September. On the other hand, milk production per cow in the United States is higher than in 2018: in October, 1 cow produced 890 kilos of milk, which is approximately 14 kilos more than in the same month last year.
