The milk supply in the European Union in September is also ahead of previous years, according to the latest figures from the European Commission. Milk production for September is even at the highest level since 2014.
Dairy farmers in the European Union produced 12,54 million tons of milk in September. This is about 5% less than last month, but that is not necessarily surprising (given the seasonal trend). Compared to the same month last year, the milk supply this year is approximately 0,8% higher. Last year, milk production in September was 12,43 million tons. This means that European milk supply this year has not yet fallen below last year's level.
Distance to average
In addition, European milk production this year has not yet come close to the 5-year average. For the month of September, this average amounts to 12,30 million tons of milk, which is approximately 2% less than was produced in September this year. Compared to previous years, European milk production appears to be minimal since 2014 hasn't been that high. In that year, the milk supply was even extremely low (11,95 million tons).
If we look at the remaining months of the year, milk supplies are expected to be slightly higher again in October. This is based on the seasonal trend. However, it reportedly subsides a little afterwards.
