Feed market also stable around Christmas

24 December 2019 - Jorine Cosse

Also around Christmas there is little exciting to do on the feed market, according to forage traders. Except for the prices of spent grains, everything is stable compared to the previous week. The calm around the holidays is not really worrying anyone, it is an annual trend.

The price of spent grains will increase this week by €0,05 to €2,80 per percent dry matter. Supply is still limited and cannot meet demand. This tightness on the market is an annual situation. A problem that may arise in the long term is that waiting times to obtain product are becoming increasingly longer. This is due to the production stop at breweries. The delivery of an order may therefore take a few weeks.

Within the silage maize market, there are some wild stories about silage maize being traded for €75 per ton, free of charge, but not all traders agree on this. Only maize with really good content and high quality manages to achieve this price. The average price, just like last week, is €70 per tonne.

Stable prices
Little has changed for the straw market, the same applies to silage. Straw is selling well, but prices remain the same at €100 per tonne for both wheat and barley straw respectively. The demand for Spanish finely chopped straw in particular is increasing and is being incorporated into the ration to provide rest in the rumen. You may have to pay an extra tenner for this. The price of silage grass remains stable this week at €50 per tonne. There is a bit more demand for good quality silage, but this is difficult to find. Silage grass of slightly lower quality is available in sufficient quantities.

The potato products are popular, but this is not reflected in the price. There is little trade in perennial ryegrass and prices remain stable. The prices of red fescue, tall fescue and meadowbeam also remain stable compared to last week.

In short: the demand for the products appears to be increasing slightly, but the prices are not yet responding. All in all, not an exciting week for the feed market. Traders also indicate this week that this will probably remain the case for a while.
