ABZ steals 147 livestock farmers from the competition

13 January 2020 - Wouter Baan

ABZ Diervoeding saw its membership increase last year by 147 to 1.862. General director Marcel Roordink says the increase is better than expected. The key to this success? "We are not too big and not too small."

Although the financial balance has not yet been finalized, ABZ Diervoeding content looks back on the past year. Roordink expects the cooperative to write black figures again. The growing number of members in the anniversary year (100th anniversary), while the number of livestock farmers in the Netherlands is shrinking, makes the director very satisfied. According to Roordink, the increase comes from all profit areas, divided over the various animal sectors.

7 fat years
Since 2013, the sales figures and the number of members have only been on the rise. The total animal feed sales last year amounted to 697.390 tons, an increase of 20% in 7 years. Roordink is not afraid that the 7 fat years will be followed by 7 lean years. "We can continue to grow in the coming years, although it is challenging to maintain the current growth." The director foresees that the total animal feed market in the Netherlands will shrink. This is due to the animal numbers that are under pressure.

Roordink has no direct explanation for the growth. "Probably it is a feeling in combination with the right price, although we are not a price fighter. We focus on customization in the rations. This probably distinguishes us from the larger players who may be less flexible." At the same time, according to Roordink, ABZ Diervoeding has sufficient scale for the so-called critical mass.
