In addition to the launch of the first Lely Orbiter in 2018, the second mini-dairy factory is now operational. This happened on the dairy farm of the Oostdam family in Bodegraven. In collaboration with online supermarket Picnic, the company will supply its own private-label milk.
The commissioning took place on Wednesday morning in a festive setting in the yard of the Oostdam family. They thus join 'My Milk'. This is a platform that aims to reduce the distance between the farmer and the consumer. The platform wants to give farmers who care about animal welfare, nature or the environment a face.
With MijnMilk, the consumer can see from which farm the milk comes. Dairy farmer Jorden Oostdam thinks this is very important: "We are very proud of the care we give our cows. The barn is designed with a view to as much comfort as possible for the cow. This may mean a little more work, but also a happier cow with a a longer life."
Oostdam is proud of the collaboration with Lely and Picnic. "The milk from the cow, milked by us with the milking robot, is processed with the Lely Orbiter. The milk is packaged by us and brought to the consumer's table by Picinic." The Orbiter is directly linked to the Astronaut milking robot from Lely. With this milking robot, the cows can be milked individually. The milk is processed immediately after milking.
For the discerning consumer
André van Troost, who recently became the new CEO of Lely, considers profitability for the farmer to be of great importance. He says that the idea behind the Orbiter is partly to make dairy farming profitable. The Orbiter offers the dairy farmer the opportunity to strengthen the bond with the consumer. "Many consumers are increasingly critical of the way their food is produced. They are looking for honest, pure, high-quality products whose origin is preferably known," says Van Troost.
According to Michiel Muller, CEO of Picnic, customers want local products and to know where the products come from. "Picnic already had local products, such as beer and honey, but the milk was still missing." Muller is very proud of the collaboration with the Oostdam family. "Having a good plan is great, but it's no use if you don't work it out."
