In January, 24 million tons of milk were collected in the top 8,1 US dairy countries. This is an increase of 1,2% compared to the same month in 2019. The supply figures are also well above the 5-year average. Milk supply will work towards the seasonal peak in May in the coming months. A new production record is in the making.
Higher animal numbers
The higher supply figures do not come out of the blue. Milk prices in the US have shown a strong recovery in the past year and even traded well above €40 per 100 kilos. This means that dairy farmers in the country again keep more cows. Compared to last December, the number of registered dairy cows with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) increased by 5.000 to 8,82 million. Compared to a year ago, this is an increase of approximately 16.000 animals.
In 2019, US milkers produced a total of 98,8 million tons. This was an increase of 0,4% compared to the previous year. Although the production volume still increased, these were the lowest growth figures in years. Production is reportedly picking up again this year, driven by higher milk prices. The USDA estimates growth at just 2%.
