Will the price of beef pellets continue to improve?

29 February 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The monthly update of compound feed prices is dominated by rising lines. This is apparent from the latest figures published by Wageningen Economic Research (WUR). All types of beef chunks have a higher price than the previous month. What is the prognosis for the coming months?

The price increases have been going on for several months now. The silage maize core chunk increases by €0,40 to €32,60 per 100 kilos. This causes the price to clearly climb to a higher level. The highest price in recent history dates from November 2018, when the price was €33,85.

Other prices also recorded significant price increases. For example, the price of protein-rich chunks (B) increases by €0,35 to €25,90. The price of beef bull chunks increases by €0,30 to €24,95. The pink calf chunk and standard chunk A both recorded a change of +€0,25 to €26,90 and €23,55 respectively.

Higher raw material prices
The higher feed prices are a response to the price increase of the most important feed raw materials in recent months. The prices of (feed) wheat and barley have been on the rise for several months. In the meantime, the price revival on the feed raw materials market is passé. The compound feed price indicator predicts that the price of A-brok will remain relatively stable in the coming month, which will probably break the upward trend.
