COPA-COGECA: Support for livestock farming desperately needed

14 April 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The European umbrella organization COPA-COGECA is calling for additional support measures for European livestock farming, it said in a letter addressed to the European Commission. The extra support is desperately needed now that the corona crisis has shut down a large part of the livestock sector.

The umbrella organization previously stood up for the fruit and vegetable sector, so now livestock farming has been added to this. With the closure of catering establishments worldwide, a large sales market for livestock farmers has disappeared. Both milk and meat producers are noticing the consequences of this. Sentiment on the dairy market is not very positive at the moment and the meat sector is also experiencing difficulties.

Fire Letters
That is why COPA-COGECA advocates support from Brussels. The organization has sent several fire letters to the European Commission to clarify the importance of support. In this letter, the representative makes it clear that the financing of the support may not come from the budget of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

In addition to financial support, COPA-COGECA also wants Brussels to stimulate and release private storage. There are now large surpluses of dairy products and meat that are not sold. For example, the rosé veal market is in a deep trough now that there are no longer any outlets for catering establishments and there are also large surpluses of dairy products. The sale of skimmed milk powder is particularly difficult, but the cheese and butter market is also experiencing the necessary problems.

Pig sector under pressure
The COPA-COGECA mainly indicates that the marketing of dairy products, beef and goat and sheep meat is experiencing problems, but also the pig sector is having a hard time† There is still a lot of uncertainty in the pig market. Meat sales are difficult and prices continue to fall. In addition, there is more supply than can be processed at the moment, which also causes the necessary problems.
