The farmers' protest among our eastern neighbors has worked: the German supermarket chains Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have significantly increased the prices for drinking milk and other liquid dairy products.
At the beginning of March, the joint purchasing organization of Aldi Nord and Süd was discredited, because the corona crisis was used to reduce the purchase prices of milk. At the time, this led to a great deal of commotion, among others German politics became involved in the discussion. Dairy farmers in Germany, across the country, took action and blocked distribution centers.
The supermarket chain turned like a leaf on the tree because of the tumult: instead of a reduction, the six-monthly supply contracts for drinking milk were increased by 5 cents per liter.
Milk price up, butter price down
It now appears that Aldi Nord and Süd are passing on the higher purchasing costs to the consumer. For example, the prices of milk, cottage cheese and cream in supermarkets have increased. The cheapest drinking milk (1,5% fat) rose by 6 cents to €0,71 per litre.
According to German media, it is likely that other supermarket chains will follow suit, as Aldi leads the way in pricing dairy products. The butter price was lowered by Aldi, as a result of lower commodity prices.
Thanks to the protests
Dairy farmers' union BDM sees the price increase as 'pay after protesting'. It is emphasized, however, that this will not save the dairy market, because the volume of drinking milk is only 11% of the total German milk pool. The chairman says that the falling butter price outweighs the higher consumer milk prices.
