British government meets dairy farmers

7 May 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

To offer dairy farmers extra support during the corona crisis, the British government is making a new fund available with extra financial support. In addition, the government also supports a marketing campaign with the aim of increasing milk consumption.

The fund is a final addition to the support announced earlier and is intended for dairy farmers who need it most. Dairy farmers are eligible for this if they lose more than 25% of their income in the months of April and May as a result of the corona crisis. There is no limit to the total funding available or the number of farmers who can receive this support.

Dairy farmers are each entitled to a maximum of £10.000. This support is intended to cover 70% of the lost income over the 2 months. In this way the farmers can continue their business and the production capacity can be maintained without consequences for animal welfare.

Marketing campaign
The British government is also investing in a marketing campaign for dairy consumption. The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (ADHB) launched a new campaign yesterday to increase milk consumption in UK households. This £1m campaign is being jointly funded by the AHDB, the government and a number of other parties.

Environment Secretary George Eustice explains the support in more detail. “We have already relaxed competition laws so that dairy farmers can work together in the most difficult months, but recognize that more needs to be done. That is why today we started a new campaign to boost milk consumption and announced another financing package.”
