German dairy company bans glyphosate and non-EU feed

2 July 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The German dairy processor Schwarzwaldmilch will ban glyphosate and purchases of protein feed outside Europe for its members from 1 July. The ban is part of extensive sustainability measures in the fields of agriculture, environment and climate.

At the annual press conference, Schwarzwaldmilch emphasizes that they stand for responsible handling of people, animals and nature. To regulate this even better, they have expanded the current sustainability measures to include a ban on glyphosate and the purchase of protein-rich feeds outside the EU. According to the milk processor, this is done in consultation with its 1.000 members.

Sustainability
With the ban on glyphosate and protein-rich feeds that do not come from the EU, the cooperative says it wants to go a step further in the sense of 'responsible agriculture'. The glyphosate ban will apply to all dairy farms in the Black Forest from 1 July. According to the milk processor, they have developed the model together with its members and it is also being implemented in practice in collaboration with them.

Since 2017, the milk supply from Schwarzwaldmilch has been GMO-free, while the members of the cooperative also have the opportunity to receive bonuses by supplying different milk flows. These milk flows are also aimed at sustainability. For example, the dairy promotes grazing by charging a surcharge of 1,66 euro cents. In addition, the processor only accepts companies if they can realize a free-range barn.

Environmental protection
In addition to making its cooperative members more sustainable, Schwarzwaldmilch is also consciously concerned with environmental protection within its own locations. For example, at the start of 2020, the company said goodbye to disposable plastic lids. This ensures that, in their own words, 12 tons of plastic waste are saved. The dairy company is also a leading supplier of dairy products in reusable glass with a market share of 40%. The company also saves 3.000 tons of CO2 emissions annually by generating energy and has been using green electricity since 2017.
