In the month of May, British dairy farmers produced a total of 1,419 million liters of milk. This is an increase of 1,7% compared to milk production over the same period last year. The milk supply is also above the 5-year average of 1,398 million litres.

Compared to the previous month, the milk supply has also increased. Milk production in May this year is no less than 4,1% higher than in April. If we look at the seasonal trend, it is expected that the peak in milk supply has been reached in May and that milk supply will be somewhat lower in the coming months.

Government support
In recent months, British dairy farmers have been hit hard by the corona crisis. There are often negative consequences and a number of dairy farmers even had to flush milk away in April.

To ensure that dairy farmers can keep their business running financially, the British government announced some time ago that it would offer additional financial support in the form of a new fund. Dairy farmers who can demonstrate that their milk earnings in April and May have been reduced by at least 25% compared to February earnings can apply for support. The maximum compensation can be up to £10.000 per dairy farmer.

On June 18, the fund opened to applications from dairy farmers in need of support following the coronavirus outbreak, and the closing date for applications is August 14.
