Cono Kaasmakers wants to scale up in the meat substitutes segment. In collaboration with Vivera, the farmers' cooperative is introducing a new cheese schnitzel with Beemster cheese. The move is not a prelude to, for example, also launching plant-based dairy products on the market.Â
It is not the first time for the cooperative that they have launched a cheese schnitzel. There was already an existing variant of Beemster cheese schnitzel. The new variant is vegetarian and, in its own words, meets the demand in the market even better. "You see the vegetarian shelf getting bigger and we see a lot of opportunities in that", says Jiska de Jong, brand manager Beemster cheese at Cono.
"We notice that more people are becoming interested in meat substitutes and that the Beemster cheese can be used to respond to this. The market for meat substitutes is growing and the number of flexitarians is also increasing." It remains to be seen how big the sales volume will be. The burger will be on the shelves at various supermarkets, including Deen, Plus and Hoogvliet
No plant-based dairy
The collaboration between Cono Kaasmakers and Vivera already existed and will be further expanded with this step. It is also being examined whether there are possibilities to develop other vegetarian products with Beemster cheese.
With this development, Cono cheese makers is not opening the door to also make the step towards plant-based milk, the company said when asked. "The basis is and remains the valorisation of the milk for our member dairy farmers." A
