Irish milk prices have been low for months, often well below 30 cents per litre. According to the Irish advocacy group Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA), it is time for all milk prices to exceed 30 cents. The first milk processor has now responded to that call.
Although most Irish milk prices for June are not yet known, Lakeland Dairies is the first milk processor to announce the price. A positive start can be said, as Lakeland has increased its price by 1 cent to 30 cents per liter. With this, the company is responding to the call of the ICMSA. The price is exclusive of surcharges and including VAT. According to a Lakeland spokesperson, the current market offers the possibility to increase the milk price for the 3.200 member dairy farmers.
Milk price paid
According to the ICMSA, Irish dairy farmers would like to be paid the full milk price and not retroactively at the end of the year. For this reason, and the fact that the dairy market is improving again, the representative considers it necessary that the minimum milk price at all cooperatives be increased to at least 30 cents per litre. The elevation of Lakeland is therefore a welcome development.
The low milk prices in Ireland are also reflected in the LTO milk price comparison. Here they serve almost monthly as last but not least, with converted prices of less than €30 per hundred litres, including surcharges and discounts. Lakeland is not included in this comparison, only Glanbia Ingredients, Kerry Agribusiness and Dairygold are mentioned.
