FrieslandCampina takes over in Nigeria

16 July 2020 - Jorine Cosse - 3 comments

In March of this year, WAMCO, the Nigerian branch of FrieslandCampina, already indicated that they were interested in acquiring Nutricima Limited. The deal is now complete. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the course of this year.

Nutricima Limited is a subsidiary in the Food & Nutrition branch of PZ Cussons International, a UK listed manufacturer and distributor of consumer products in Nigeria. The company was founded in 2005 and has since established itself in the Nigerian dairy market. It is not known what FrieslandCampina has paid.

With the acquisition, WAMCO acquires a dairy production site in Ikorodu, a city in Lagos State, and the Olympic, Coast and Nunu brands. This expands the range with powdered, condensed and ready-to-drink milk products. With the deal, FrieslandCampina WAMCO wants to strengthen its market position in Nigeria.

Friesland Campina Nigeria
FrieslandCampina has been active on the Nigerian dairy market since 1954 under the name West African Milk Company (WAMCO). Several investments have been made in recent years, including a new distribution center and a training center. With this center, the dairy processor wants to stimulate talent development and offer people training in the dairy sector. With the acquisition of Nutricima Limited, WAMCO aims to strengthen and expand its market position in order to better respond to the growing demand for affordable dairy products.

In addition to dairy production, FrieslandCampina WAMCO also runs a so-called Dairy Development Programme, in which local dairy farmers are informed and trained in sustainable and efficient agricultural practices. The aim of the dairy is to help dairy farmers by stimulating improvement in milk quality, increasing productivity per cow and gaining access to the market. Stimulation takes place through training courses, knowledge partnerships and projects to improve infrastructure around the dairy farm.
