Schouten irritates entire dairy industry

22 July 2020 - Erik Colenbrander - 14 comments

FrieslandCampina chairman Frans Keurentjes says that the ministerial feed measure is ineffective and not future-oriented. The Dutch branch of the Scandinavian Arla Foods is also not happy with the attitude of Minister Schouten.

A spokesperson says: "At Arla Foods we are proud of our farmers. We understand that dairy farmers want to express their dissatisfaction with the announced feed measure of Minister Schouten of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. As a farmers' cooperative, we share the concerns of dairy farmers and find We believe that animal welfare should not be compromised by such measures."

How the baker should bake bread
FrieslandCampina chairman Frans Keurentjes already responded last week in a video message to the members. In this he states that he understands the frustrations in the sector and the anger of farmers about the feed measure. "Why does the minister have to decide how I should feed my cows," says Keurentjes, who has a dairy farm in Hornhuizen in Groningen. "The government is not going to prescribe how the baker should bake his bread? This attitude of the minister causes irritation and even annoyance."

Earlier today let Royal A-ware know to support the demonstrating farmers in their opposition to Minister Schouten's feed measure. Yesterday, the Dutch Dairy Organization (NZO) published a statement on its website. In it, the joint Dutch dairy company states that it sees no solution in blockades. Well in the solution at the table.

Conversations with KNMvD
The outcome of Minister Schouten's conversation with the veterinary organization KNMvD about the effects of the feed measure on animal health is awaited with interest. To date, the minister's talks with the KNMvD have not yet led to a different attitude on the part of the minister.

All parties that earn big money on the backs of the dairy farmers are starting to pinch him. They will express a lot of support in the coming time because the wallet is in danger. In practice, the Netherlands would not have any problem with the food supply if 75% of the dairy farmers were to stop. Maybe not nice to hear, but reality.

At the same time, arable farming, glasshouse horticulture and fruit growing have completely different challenges, which proves once again that there is not a clear interest in agriculture. Perhaps the advocates should also split that will ultimately be more effective.

Horse and carriage minus Schouten unsuitable to offer the sector perspective March 2021 she will be sent back to the kitchen with tar and feathers Hopefully the animal husbandry will get a smarter minister Christian Union Mar 202i of the agricultural sector 0 seats

Dairy farmers do not have a dominant position as raw material producers. They are crushed on the one hand by the powerful supermarket chains and on the other by the powerful animal feed and machine manufacturers. The manufacturers also put them behind their backs to protest. There must again be a reasonably high minimum price for milk, which gives them the right to exist. A minimum price of euro 0,45 in the EU and corresponding import duties for milk and milk powder. In other sectors, FAIRTRADE principles are applied, why not to milk. Naturally coupled with volume control and environmental protection. The right to exist must be the starting point, then those hundreds of forms of subsidies could be dropped.

All subsidies gone Gijs, and only here in the shop that meets our requirements, not like now, see meadow milk has no added value, only the supplement comes from those who do not graze, if something has no added value, do not apply this either. is also a subsidy, then no cows in the meadow, better for everyone

Excellent Gijs, minimum price of € 0,50/kg milk and milk q. back based on a reference date that is before 01-04-2015.
Everyone gets better.
And a big line through that income support misery.
give this money to the food bank or something, we will no longer need that in this future new paradise situation.

Perhaps part of this money can also be used to release those giga expanders from after 01-04-2015 from their misery and also to guide them to a regular job.
The whole society will benefit from it.

Gijs, isn't the Minister of Agriculture something for you in a next cabinet?
Keep going, we hope to hear from you.

I honestly don't believe Gijs is suitable. When he argues that livestock farmers are being crushed between supermarkets and animal feed/machine manufacturers, he makes a crucial fallacy in my opinion. No livestock farmer is obliged to make his sales via the Supermarket Channel and there is also no livestock feed or machine supplier who obliges the livestock farmer to purchase his products. The farmer is completely free in that!

Yes, but Gijs has 2 strong points that more than compensate for a few missed sales, namely: a good milk price and production control.
Voila, problem solved very easily.
We'll get there with Gijs. This in contrast to Carol

There is also no future for Schouten after the next elections, just a shame that she leaves a mess and havoc behind, she might end up in construction, that's where her ambitions lie anyway
rule maker 26 July 2020
No Dirk, as long as nothing like cost price increases are pushed down our throats, and everything is allowed to enter through the back door via trade agreements without any requirement, then it can never work out, the government's attitude, including Gijs, is not good. The current prices are plenty high enough, only the rules don't fit!

Well, our current cost level outside the regulations does not fit the current milk price either.
rule maker 26 July 2020
Then the minister is right, stop right away, producing too expensive due to natural circumstances has no future

no, don't think so hard.
half of farmers must disappear.
goes by itself.
regulators will remain.

@regelbedenker: 'cats' on people makes no sense and offers no perspective.
Thinking in terms of rules and subsidies subjects us even more to rules and subsidies. And the whole bureaucracy involved and costing billions. As farmers you have to send a clear message to the police: sharply raise prices in the EU, protect the EU market, provide a raison d'être and solve environmental problems. You can pay for the transition with the savings of the subsidy bureaucracy. Who could be against that? Come on, get to work.
You can no longer respond.
