The Ministry of Agriculture is in consultation with the Association of Veterinarians (KNMvD) to make the feed measure more flexible and thus limit the health risks in dairy cattle. Within the current generic frameworks, the professional organization sees no possibilities for this, so they focus on customization.
A while ago, the union criticized Minister Schouten's plan to reduce the crude protein content in concentrated feed in dairy cows in the context of nitrogen reduction. This was followed by discussions with the aim of raising concerns from veterinarians and adjusting the feed measure in order to avert the risks.
A spokesperson for the KNMvD indicates that the measure mainly causes problems because it is generic. "Even if we move within the frameworks with regard to the crude protein content, there will still be health risks." The professional organization therefore rejects the plan as it is now on the table. According to the KNMvD, the solution must be sought in customization.
'Ball is at ministry'
In terms of content, the KNMvD does not want to go into the discussions too deeply, as the subject is politically sensitive. Based on the last interview that took place last week, the ministry has asked additional questions that have since been answered by the KNMvD. "The ball is now in the ministry", according to the KNMvD, where it is realized that time is running out, since Schouten's plan will come into effect in September.
