After a dip due to the corona crisis, the Dutch milk supply is picking up again. In a European context, the Netherlands is one of the emerging countries, although European production is expected to...
With an average fat percentage of 4,25, the Dutch milk supply last month amounted to 1,174 million tons, which is 1,15% more than in the same month last year. This means production continues to expand. In June the supply was 0,95% ahead of last year and in May this was a lead of 0,55%. Growth was much greater in the months before, but the corona crisis put a brake on production. There was a brief fear that milk prices would exceed the €30 mark, but that did not happen.
July was a cool month
Daily production last month was 37.895 tons, compared to 38.495 tons in June. This means that the declining seasonal production is visible in the figures. In August, the declining seasonal production may be reflected more rapidly in the supply figures. So far, the last month of summer has been tropically warm with an official heat wave. This puts production back a notch on many dairy farms. July was a cool month, with the average temperature almost 1 degree lower than normal
The Netherlands is one of the growing countries
In European terms, the Netherlands is one of the growth countries, just like Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Poland and Italy. In the first 5 months of this year, European supply was 1,9% higher than last year at 68,8 million tons. The European Commission expects milk production to decline in the third and fourth quarters, although growth figures were initially expected. Due to the strong growth in the first months of this year, Brussels expects that the supply for the whole of 2020 will be 0,7% higher than last year.
