Milk production in the United States picked up considerably in July. Encouraged by rising milk prices, there has never been so much milk supplied to factories in the US in the past summer.
Although American dairy farms also had to anticipate a heat wave, almost 24 million tons of milk were delivered to the 8,1 most important dairy states in the US in July. This is more than 1,5% more than in the same month in 2019. This means that milk production is further recovering from a small dip in May, when - partly as a result of the corona crisis - milk supply was well below that of last year.
There were signals
However, in June milk production was already 0,8% higher than in the same month in 2019, followed by the extra plus last month. The signals of increasing milk production were there before. After the corona dip, the American dairy market is recovering strongly, resulting in rising milk prices.
It became clear at the beginning of this month that American dairy farmers send fewer cows to slaughter and therefore keep more animals. This now translates into higher production. The US dairy herd in the 24 dairy states amounts to 8,83 million animals, 44.000 more than in July 2019 and 2.000 more than in June of this year. The average production per cow is 914,44 kilos, more than 8,6 kilos above average.
Milk production in the entire United States in July amounted to more than 8,43 million tons, also an increase of 1,5%.
