Fonterra: New Zealand dairy exports on the rise

1 September 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

The export of New Zealand dairy is picking up, according to the dairy company Fonterra in its monthly market report. In addition to more exports, the cooperative also managed to collect more milk.

The milking season is in New Zealand good start† Milk production in July was more than 4% higher than last year. The milking season thus makes up for the disappointing previous months to some extent. Over the past 12 months, production was on average 0,5% lower than last year.

Fonterra collected approximately 4,1% more milk in June than last year. Growth of 4,2% was achieved on the North Island, while the South Island grew by 3,5%. Fonterra also managed to collect more milk in Australia, about 6,5% more than last year.

Dairy exports up
The market report also states that New Zealand has been able to increase its dairy exports. About 9% more dairy was exported in June than in the same period last year. This was mainly due to an increasing demand for whole milk powder from the Middle East. In Australia, dairy exports realized greater growth, with exports in June being 14,8% higher than last year. The United States has even achieved an increase of 26,5%.

China imports almost a quarter more
The Chinese volumes of dairy imports have also risen sharply. Over the month of June, the country imported a total of 21,4% more dairy than last year, but these figures are global and not just based on New Zealand dairy imports.
