Feed market awaits new harvests

1 September 2020 - Jorine Cosse

In terms of price levels, little has really changed in the past week. Nevertheless, there is unrest in the feed market, because both buyer and seller are waiting for new harvests of maize, potatoes and possibly grass. Price fluctuations cannot therefore be ruled out in the coming weeks.

There is still a lot of commotion about straw prices. They remain stable at €120 per tonne for both barley and wheat straw, but given the supply, prices are under pressure. It is reportedly virtually impossible to buy straw for a decent price in France and bring it to the Netherlands. The supply in the Netherlands is also moderate and appears to be drying up. Those who still have straw in the shed prefer to hold on to it for a while.

Price pending harvest
For silage maize, potatoes and silage grass, the market is awaiting new harvests. It is said in the corridors that the price of silage maize will fall, but this has not yet been reflected. For this week it remains stable at €70 per tonne (free farm). It remains to be seen what the supply will do when most of the corn is in the field.

The price of silage grass is stable at €60 delivered to the farmer, but traders indicate that it is very difficult to put a price tag on a load of grass. There is a difference in quality and the supply is minimal. It is expected that some will be released, but that probably depends on what will come of the country.

The same applies to feed potatoes. The supply has dried up considerably and prices vary. In general, €40 per tonne (free of charge) is paid. Here too we have to wait and see what the new harvest will do.

Hay and spent grain
For meadow hay, the supply is good, for now it is still in balance with the supply. The price remains at €190 per tonne, but another increase is expected in view of the stable season. The same applies to the different grass seed hay types. These are all stable.

Beer spent grain is also stable and awaiting the market. Now that the feeding measure is off the table, it remains to be seen how demand will meet supply. For now, the price is stable between €2,65 (south) and €2,85 (north) with an average price of about €2,70 per percent dry matter. Breweries normally peak during this period, so supply is likely to decline.
