FrieslandCampina no longer in the top 5 in dairy

2 September 2020 - Wouter Baan - 2 comments

FrieslandCampina is no longer one of the top 5 largest dairy companies in the world, according to a ranking by Rabobank based on turnover in 2019 and completed acquisitions in the first half of 2020.

The Dutch dairy cooperative has been surpassed by an American and a Chinese processor. The New Zealand Fonterra is no longer in the top 5. With a turnover of $12,6 billion, FrieslandCampina is in 7th place this year. Although there are significant shifts in the list, the top 2 of the ranking remains unchanged.

Nestlé at the top
Swiss Nestlé is still in the lead with sales of $22 billion, followed by French dairy processor Lactalis, which achieved sales of $21 billion last year. New in the top 3 is the American dairy cooperative Dairy Farmers of America who were able to report sales above $20 billion. Last year, this company was still in 6th place, but thanks to the takeover of the bankrupt Dean Foods they rise a few spots.

Yili biggest riser
The Chinese Yili is also doing well, moving from 8th to 5th place. Turnover last year was $13,4 billion, 20% higher than the year before. The Chinese dairy giant is growing fast, partly thanks to the acquisition of the Chinese dairy cooperative Westland. Dairy cooperative Arla Foods drops from 7th to 9th place with a turnover of $11,8 billion. Outside the top 10, the German dairy cooperative DMK rises from 13th to 11th place.

What difference does it make whether the customer is the largest or the smallest? It is much more important to know how much the buyer pays and how much margin there is between what the buyer pays and the cost price of the supplier/producer

As a fairly large company, FC wants to participate in the largest. Our vision, without innovations and at low prices. Yes, then you will be outplayed internationally. What do the farmers/members get? Low price for the raw material milk. Consumers are drinking less and less milk, while milk is much cheaper than a bottle of mineral water. For a better farmer's livelihood, the milk price in the EU must be raised to a level in which all costs are amply reimbursed. Our minister, all interest groups and the EU are continuing on a path that was doomed to failure 50 years ago. Grants are just blots for bleeding.
