New Zealand halts livestock exports after shipping disaster

4 September 2020 - Wouter Baan

New Zealand has decided to suspend live cattle exports for the time being. This in response to the shipping disaster with 43 people on board and about 5.800 dairy cows that took place this week off the coast of Japan.

The ship, which was en route from New Zealand to China, most likely capsized during a hurricane in the East China Sea near Japan. Although the search is still in full swing, it is believed that almost all those on board drowned. So far 2 people have been found, of which 1 person has died.

Export was already under discussion
The New Zealand government wants to know what happened to the ship and therefore export applications for livestock will not be honored for the time being. Livestock exports were already under discussion in New Zealand, apart from the shipping disaster. The Minister of Agriculture launched a plan last year, in which a total ban was 1 of 4 options.

Other options include a partial ban or improving conditions during transportation. Beef cattle may no longer be exported for a number of years, the export today only concerns breeding stock.

China wholesaler
China is a major buyer of New Zealand milk heifers. Chinese customs figures show that more than 2020 cattle have been imported from New Zealand so far in 46.000, mainly intended to expand milk production. Australia also exports relatively more cows than the 'Kiwis'.
