RFC significantly expands production of lactoferinne

10 September 2020 - Jorine Cosse

By 2022, FrieslandCampina Ingredients wants to significantly expand the production capacity of lactoferrin in Veghel. The dairy processor says the expansion will enable growth in the Early Life Nutrition and Adult Nutrition segments.

The production capacity will be increased by 60 tons per year, bringing the total capacity to 70 tons per year. FrieslandCampina Ingredients is proud to announce that with this capacity it is the world's largest producer of lactoferin. It is an important ingredient in baby food, among other things.

No surprise
The expansion is not entirely unexpected. Last year FrieslandCampina already entered into a collaboration in the production and supply of lactoferrin with the American United Dairymen of Arizona (UDA). With this, the processor expected to produce 10 tons of lactoferrin per year. There was also talk of a possible expansion of production during the collaboration.

Such a significant expansion in production is no great surprise in terms of purpose and importance. Last year there was a worldwide shortage of the ingredient. As a result, FrieslandCampina also had to absorb some blows, since it was able to sell considerably fewer cans of infant food to China.

Lactoferrin
Lactoferrin is an important ingredient in infant nutrition and is obtained from raw milk. The substance is naturally present in cow's milk and breast milk. Several studies have determined that lactoferinne has various health-promoting properties such as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

According to FrieslandCampina, the worldwide demand for lactoferinne almost doubled between 2014 and 2019. With the expansion, the dairy group therefore wants to be able to continue to meet the demand of its customers, says FrieslandCampina.
