Has the fall in the price of beef chunks come to an end?

1 October 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The prices of beef chunks for September show a very different picture than expected, according to the monthly prices of the WUR. There were still sharp declines in August, it was to be expected that the bottom for the cattle chunks was not yet in sight. That turns out to be different.

The price of standard chunk A is the only one that recorded a decrease in the month of September. And that only at €0,10 per 100 kilos. The price therefore amounts to €24,15 per 100 kilos delivered to the yard. This means that the lump sum price remains high over the 5-year average. This can partly be explained by high raw material prices and the drought of recent years. At the beginning of this year, the price reached a peak not seen since 2013.

Price increases and stability
Both the silage maize core chunks and the pink calf chunks have recorded a price increase. While the silage maize core chunk suffered a significant drop of €0,50 last month, it will increase again in September by €0,20 to €33,45 per 100 kilos. This chunk is therefore the fastest price riser. Last May, the chunk price recorded a new record at €34,90 per 100 kilos. For now, it remains below the old record from 2019.

The price of pink calf chunks is also increasing. This will increase by €0,05 to €27,45 per 100 kilos. In recent months, this chunk price has experienced a less intense trend than, among other things, the silage maize core chunk. No new price record has been set and the price has been relatively stable since April.

The protein-rich pellet and the beef bull pellet record the same price in September as in August. The protein-rich chunk is priced at €26,50 and beef bull at €25,30 per 100 kilos. Last month they both went down by €0,10.

Outlook
Looking at the Boerenbusiness Compound feed price indicator there was indeed a small increase in price movements. It is difficult to determine where this comes from. A few months ago there was a significant drop in raw material prices, but an increase in between cannot be linked to this. From the beginning of October, prices seem to take a step back, after which they remain stable at the average price trend.
