Glanbia started the new cheese factory in the United States this week. The Irish dairy group will be testing the factory in the coming months, which will eventually process 3,6 million liters of milk daily into block cheese and high-quality whey products.
Glanbia has announced this. The MWC plant is located in St. Johns, Michigan, and is a joint venture of Glanbia Nutritionals, Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and Select Milk Producers. A total of $470 million is invested in the plant. With the cheese and whey products, Glanbia wants to serve not only the American market, but also the international markets.
Purveyor to the Kingdom
Dairy Farmers of America, the largest dairy cooperative in the United States with more than 13.000 member dairy farmers, will be the primary supplier of milk to the new factory. In Michigan, DFA has more than 350 affiliated dairy farms.
Glanbia Nutritionals, DFA and Select Milk Producers are also partners in another joint venture: Southwest Cheese. According to Glanbia, this factory in Clovis (New Mexico) is the largest cheese and whey factory in the world. A $130 million expansion was recently completed there. With this, Glanbia says it wants to respond to the growing global demand for dairy products.
