Dutch milk supply over the summer dip

16 November 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The Dutch milk supply follows the same line as last year's figures for the second month in a row. The blow that the heat wave dealt in the summer months is a thing of the past.

More than 2020 million tons of milk were supplied in October 1,13, which means the supply is virtually the same as in October 2019, with a small difference of only 700 tons of milk. After rounding, the difference in fat percentage is nil at 4,49%. The same applies to the average daily production, which in October this year was only 36.461 tonnes lower than in 20 at 2019 tonnes.

Recovery in second wave?
It remains to be seen what the milk supply will do in the coming months, given the second corona wave occurred at the end of October and the beginning of November. In previous months it could be seen that the intelligent lockdown did have an influence on the milk supply. There is a good chance that the new restrictions will create the same picture again next month, as restaurants have had to close their doors again.

The consequences are already being felt in the dairy sector, especially in the demand for butter and cheese. The demand for liquid dairy, on the other hand, is increasing. This is probably due to the increased demand from retail, where butter and cheese are more dependent on the food sector. Another side effect is that liquid dairy is still limitedly available as a result of last summer's dip. Now that the supply is not showing a strong recovery, the question is whether this will continue to have an effect in the coming months.
