Price change on grass seed hay feed market

17 November 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The feed market is located in calm waters. The demand for almost all products is still not going strong, except for spent grains. Almost all prices remain the same, except for those of meadow grass and reed fescue.

In recent weeks, a clearer picture of grass seed hay prices has emerged. In the previous weeks, little or nothing was known about price developments, as trading was at a low level. Perennial ryegrass and red fescue remain at €140 and €150 per tonne ex-farm respectively, while tall fescue and meadow meadow have increased. For tall fescue it is a relatively small step from €10 to €140 per tonne. With meadow meadow it is a different story. It takes a big step up by €25 to €150.

According to various traders, freight is being lost here and there, although it is minimal. The low supply drives up the price. An average of €150 seems realistic for now, although they also go for more, depending on the transport distance. With this price, Veldbeemd is based on the price of the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019.

Tight supply continues
The other prizes are stable this week. The spent grain market is still characterized by high demand and little supply. The price will therefore remain at €2,70 per percent of dry matter delivered to the livestock farmer for another week. There has not been a time in the past 2 years when the price has been at a high level for longer than the past few weeks.

In addition to the tight supply of spent grains, the supply of feed potatoes and silage grass remains limited. It just doesn't affect the price. The livestock farmer pays an average of around €40 per tonne for a load of beautiful, clean potatoes. The price of silage remains at €65 per tonne.

Stability again
The prices of straw, meadow hay and silage maize have also been at the same level for several weeks. Those prices also remain for this week. Straw is listed at €135 per tonne, meadow hay at €200 per tonne and silage maize at €70 per tonne. The supply of silage maize is limited.
