Inside Milk price comparison

Danone is the only European milk price down

27 November 2020 - Jorine Cosse

Virtually all European milk prices have increased or remain stable over the month of October. Only the French processor Danone is taking a big step back. Milcobel still acts as the last player and FrieslandCampina remains in the middle bracket.

In the LTO milk price comparison, the average European milk price increases by €0,27 to €33,26 per 100 kilos of milk. This brings the average one step closer to last year's price, although the difference of €0,46 is still relatively large. Catching up seems unthinkable for now, as milk prices appear to stabilize in the coming months.

The stability can already be partly seen in October. Almost all processors increased the price or left the price unchanged. The only decline concerns the milk price of the French Danone, which fell by €1,60 to €35,09. The decline is significant, but the price nevertheless remains in the top 5. French milk prices are doing well in general, as all French processors are at the top of the milk price comparison.

Big climbers
Despite the fact that FrieslandCampina added €0,50 in October, the milk price remains in the middle bracket and is even lower than the average at €33,19. Other milk processors also managed to raise the price considerably. The British Saputo Dairy took the cake with an increase from €2,70 to €32,79 per 100 kilos of milk, which means the price is far behind the €30 mark.

2 of the 3 German processors are also doing something extra. For example, the price of DMK increases by one euro to €31,93 and Müller adds €0,50, bringing the price to €31,57. The French processors are again doing well, with only Danone making a reduction. The other processors almost all remain stable, with Granarolo leading the milk price comparison at €37,87 per 100 kilos.

From deep valley to high peak
The milk price in the US continues to yo-yo. While prices fell into a deep trough in September, the price rose again in October with an increase of €10,60 per 100 kilos of milk. As a result, the price is again well above 40 euros at €45,06. The other international prizes are a bit slower. Emmi increases by just under a euro to €55,77, CAPSA is again focusing on stability and Fonterra is taking €0,10 off.
