Protein demand keeps brewer's grain price high

1 December 2020 - Jorine Cosse

The feed market remains in calm waters this week. Only the high brewer's grain price attracts attention. The other prices remain stable, except for a small correction of the maize price. What are the prospects?

Just like last week, the spent grain price is sky-high at €2,90 per percent dry matter. That is a record price for the second week in a row. This is partly driven by little supply and relatively high demand. There is also a lot of demand for protein-rich products, which is reflected in the prices of, among other things, soy. In addition, spent grain is suitable for feeding in a slightly damp autumn pit with little coarse ash.

As for grass pits, the wet autumn pits dominate the market. Pits with the correct percentages and an optimal dry matter content are hardly found. For a relatively good silage, the livestock farmer pays an average of €65 per tonne, while really good silage can reach €70 per tonne due to the limited supply.

Small correction
The only price that is different this week is that of silage maize. In the DCA quotation, the price is reduced by €5 to €70 per tonne, to bring the price back into line with market prices. This price applies to a solid corn silage with desirable values and a good dry matter content. At the moment, corn pits are still difficult to find, traders said. Now it is true that the question is also tame.

Furthermore, the prices and supply and demand of the other products remain stable. A price of €40 per tonne is still used for feed potatoes. There is still little product available, although demand is adjusting accordingly. Pasture hay remains high priced at €200 per tonne and grass seed hay also remains stable at €150 for red fescue and meadow meadow and €140 for tall fescue and perennial ryegrass.

Stable straw market
It is striking that the straw market still remains stable. Many traders think that the price will not rise again for at least the next month. Here and there there are reports that there is still sufficient straw available in France, but that it is still being retained. For now there is sufficient straw available, the price remains at €135 per tonne for both wheat and barley straw.
