Polish milk supply is growing strongly despite corona

21 December 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

The Polish milk supply continues to be ahead of last year's milk production, a development that has been going on all year. In other European countries, the milk supply has sometimes decreased as a result of corona. After a few months of contraction, Germany is showing slight growth again.

Nearly 999.000 kilos of milk was produced in October, making the percentage approximately 1,8% higher than last year. Dairy farmers in Poland have been increasing production for a long time, this October milk production is about 4,4% higher than the 5-year average.

The corona crisis does play a role
Despite the growth, Polish dairy farmers are not affected by the corona crisis, according to a report in the Warsaw Business Journal. The Polish beef and dairy industry is also experiencing significant setbacks as a result of the corona crisis. Sales opportunities to the catering industry have stagnated considerably, just like in other countries. The Polish Federation of Livestock and Milk Producers encourages the population to consume more beef and dairy products to keep businesses running.

Polish dairy farmers are therefore indeed suffering from the corona crisis. Nevertheless, the milk supply is considerably higher than last year. This has to do with the severe drought that the country has been experiencing over the past 2 years. Milk yield was negatively affected by this, but is catching up a little this year.

Slight growth in Germany
In Germany, the milk supply also increased in October compared to last year. A positive change compared to the previous months, when the production level did not match last year's figures. In total, German dairy farmers produced approximately 2 million kilos of milk in October, according to Eurostat figures.

Milk production exceeds last year's level for the first time since July and is 0,7% higher. A small increase in percentage terms, but still a positive development considering the amount of milk the country produces. The milk supply even shows a slightly larger plus compared to the 5-year average, the difference there being 0,8%.
