High demand for protein-rich food

2 February 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

DCA feed prices remain stable this week. There is quite a bit of demand for roughage and the trade continues smoothly. The exception to this is protein-rich food. The demand for this remains high and the supply is limited.

Silage grass is currently available in limited quantities. There are plenty of wetter pits of poorer quality. However, good potholes are not offered excessively. Livestock farmers are still waiting to sell and want to be sure that they have enough feed until spring. The price of silage can therefore rise to €80 per tonne and more. The average quote for grass silage this week is €70 per tonne.

Protein-rich food is expensive
The price of protein-rich feed remains high. Beer spent grain is relatively expensive at €2,90 per percent dry matter. Livestock farmers are looking for alternatives, but there is not much supply. The relatively expensive soy seems to be creating a significant floor in the market. It is currently interesting to look critically at the ration. There may be opportunities to reduce some of the feed costs with products such as spent grain, corngold or soda grain. In many cases, a good, well-considered choice can still make a profit, especially at the current high price level.

The prices of grass seed hay and straw remain at €150 and €140 per tonne this week. There is a reasonable demand for straw, but players who still have lots in stock seem to expect the price to rise even further in the coming weeks. The meadow hay price this week is €200 per tonne. There is quite a bit of demand for good hay, but the supply is not excessive.

Last year there was a wide range of feed potatoes. Now that potato prices have risen, this supply has largely dried up. The price of feed potatoes remains the same as last week and is €40 per tonne, but the supply is not large. Cutting maize is trading at €70 per tonne this week. Just like last week, there is good demand for this, but there is also sufficient supply.
